Food Revolution…a Friday Favorite!
- April 16, 2010 -
If you have not checked out Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution on ABC yet, you’re missing out! I am not a big fan of TV in general, in fact growing up (much like the Obama girls) I wasn’t allowed to watch TV on school nights, and anything on the weekends had to be approved. Not getting to watch 90210 or Melrose Place was complete torture in high school, but I actually think it provided me with a strong filter of what is worth my time and what is not. So what have I determined is worth my precious time? Here they are, in no particular order; Project Runway, Brothers and Sisters, 30 Rock, the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, No Reservations, and of course, now, Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution…
Jamie Oliver is on a mission to improve not only the way we eat, but the way we look at food. He and I are SO on the same page when it comes to seeing food as a beautiful, delicious, social part of life. It’s all about balance and common sense. I love food, most kinds. In fact some of my favorite foods are what dietitians would call the enemy…cheese, red meat and potatoes (in fact I love them all together on a plate disguised as a cheeseburger and fries). These all “have a place in our diets”- Jamie Oliver, we just need to balance them with green veggies, fresh fruit, and good healthy ingredients.

Another core value that Jamie Oliver and I share is that “Ultimately it’s about the way we treat ourselves, and most importantly our kids“. As part of Bloumebaby’s mission statement, I believe that what we do today determines what sort of environment our children will get to enjoy in the future. This not only applies to how we treat the earth, but what lessons and values we instill in our kids AND our society.
Eating is part of life, something every single human being has to do to survive. So why not ensure that we have the education and the values put in place to improve what and how we eat at home, at school and in restaurants. Our kids depend on us to teach them how to thrive in society, how to read, how to write, how to drive a car, how to interact with others, and how to stay healthy and safe. Right now we are failing as a society to teach our children how to stay healthy- Diabetes and Heart Disease are the leading cause of death in this nation, and the statistics on childhood obesity are staggering- “Among pre-school age children 2-5 years of age, obesity increased from 5 to 10.4% between 1976-1980 and 2007-2008 and from 6.5 to 19.6% among 6-11 year olds. Among adolescents aged 12-19, obesity increased from 5 to 18.1% during the same period.” - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
