A must have for all stylish mommies…

sandal

A must have in your mommy wardrobe is at least one pair of sexy sandals. Let’s face it, heels look great, elongate our legs, and add some spice to any outfit…but the truth is, unless we are headed to a wedding or for a night out on the town, flats are the name of the game. They are comfortable, functional, and still can offer a bit of spice. Pair them with some cropped cargos, skinny jeans or a sun dress and watch your everyday look become a hot momma look!

Here are some of my favorites out right now…

Healthy breakfast, mommy and me style…

oatmeal

So your lil one has to eat, and so do you…why not whip up something quick, healthy and satisfying for BOTH of you at once? While I am sure you wish your lil one could enjoy eggs over easy as much as you do, or savor in the amazingly indulgent flavor of bacon, lets face it, those are too messy, too much work and quite honestly, not the best choice for a toddler (or you for that matter)- so, instead I say go for the super easy, super healthy, super food- OATMEAL! Now for some of you this sounds completely boring…if you are one of those, I say spice it up with apple sauce, banana, blueberries, dried cranberries, nuts or even simple brown sugar, or all of the above if you are looking for a real morning adventure.

Now, I have to make a rule here- you cant grab the instant kind that you throw hot water into or toss into the microwave (oh, the microwave, thats a whole other blog posting)- those are full of sugar, instead grab the good ole fashion rolled oats. They are really just as simple as the instant, they are ready in about 5 minutes- you just boil some water or milk (milk is suggested to add calcium and protein to the oats), add the oats, stir a bit, and voila- you are done!

Why oatmeal? Well, here are some very convincing reasons why…

1. Oats are an excellent source of 2 kinds of fiber- 1. Insoluble Fiber, which are cancer fighting and 2. Soluble Fiber, which may reduce the bad cholesterol while leaving the good cholesterol alone (oatmeal actually has a higher content of soluble fiber than rice, whole wheat or corn). It also slows down the digestion of starch, which for diabetics, is very important to their blood sugar levels.

2. It has been found that those who eat oats have a lower risk of developing heart disease.

3. Oats are great source of not just fiber, but also Vitamin E, Zinc, Selenium, Copper, Iron, Manganese, and Magnesium- as well as protein.

Not convinced? Studies also show that oatmeal helps lead to healthy weight control and a stronger metabolism.

Stylish, healthy and a mom…

Yes its possible and I intend to prove it through this blog from here on out…
I know it seems like maintaining a sense of style while schlepping your lil one to and from the park, or to music class, or school or swimming lessons or the grocery store, or soccer practice…(you get the idea) seems like a waist of time or simply too much work. And I know too, that choosing to make a salad for lunch instead of eating a few o your lil guy’s chicken nuggets or string cheese seems like it would take an impossible amount of self control and there is no way on this green earth that you could do it everyday…trust me, I know! It aint a cake walk, (but then again neither is being a parent) but I think it’s completely doable and totally necessary! We are strong, beautiful women who deserve the confidence and second looks that we got just a few years back.

I have always (well, at least since high school when I FINALLY got out of a uniform and had permanent free dress) loved fashion, and over the years have developed my own sense of style that in a way, defines me. If I had to describe “my style”, I guess I would say its a large scoop of the 60’s, mixed with a tablespoon of beachy comfort, an topped off with a pinch of glamour. What in the world does that look like, you ask? Here’s a picture of one of my favorite dresses…I have worn it to weddings, out to dinner, when pregnant, when slim- its an amazing dress that captures the essence of my style in a nutshell. (and no, that is not me in the picture!)

So…you have a glimpse into my style, now how do I qualify as healthy? Well, I do a few things that keep my mind and body feeling fresh and alert and sometimes even toned. 1. I run. First thing in the morning after I feed my little guy his oatmeal and fruit- we hit the strand in Manhattan Beach and I run. Sometimes its 2 miles, sometimes it’s 7…depends on how I feel that day. Sometimes it’s just walking at a brisk pace- but unless there is rain, we are out and about by 9am. Then, on the way home, I reward myself with a Latte or Iced Coffee…everyone deserves a treat after working hard! 2. I eat almost exclusively organic food…and I say almost exclusively because there are a few fruits and veggies or dried goods that do not need to be organic (things like avocados, broccoli, pasta etc), and because I LOVE to eat out on the weekends- and lets face it, not all restaurants serve local, organic foods! 3. I drink tons of water, then a touch of red wine. That’s right, I look forward to my glass of wine each night as I wind down the day and enjoy a homecooked meal. Afterall, like I said before, everyone deserves a treat after working hard…and after a long day of being a mom and business owner, I like to enjoy a treat of red wine.

So is it possible to be stylish, healthy AND a mom? I think so. I think it’s critically important to hold on to the things that made you proud, made you confident, made you who you are before you were pregnant and before you were a mommy. Of course, now that you are a master of parenthood and your life is richer, fuller and more meaningful, things are a bit different and some priorities have changed (lets face it, blow drying your hair takes a distant second to feeding your baby or getting some much needed laundry done)…but keeping yourself feeling great will only bring more happiness and life to your home. I hope that sharing my tips and tricks through this blog will bring you inspiration and new ideas on how to keep your style and your health in fabulous shape! Afterall, you have already taken on the greatest challenge of all- being a parent, the rest is easy…

Sarah Jessica Parker strolling with Marion in style

The ultimate fashionista, Sarah Jessica Parker, was recently photographed with her daughter, Marion, cozied up against her mom in a baby Bjorn and dressed in the super soft bamboo coverall by Kicky Pants. Apparently, comfort and style are equally important when it comes to her lil’ ones…the bamboo basics from Kicky Pants are super soft, breathe well and are hypoallergenic. Not to mention they are made from an eco friendly sustainable fiber (bamboo of course) with natural anti-bacterial properties. It requires no pesticides or herbicides in the growing process, and is naturally soft, light and silky with no spurs or rough patches, so it does not require synthetic or chemical processing. But what do we really love in this photo?? The mix of hot pink (it may be  SJP’s sweater just draped over Marion’s back, but we love it!) and the traditional baby pink of the coverall…what a fresh way to do pink for spring!
